Eriq La Salle as Darryl Jenks, Lisa's boyfriend whom she eventually breaks up with. The movie was released on June 29th, 1988 and the budget for the movie was $39,000,000.

The plot of the movie was Prince Akeem Joffer never done anything by himself growing up. So, he became angry the fact that he cannot go to the bathroom by himself nor cook for himself. Everything has to be prepared and ready for Akeem because he was a prince. He basically got pampered his whole life. Akeem became more upset when his father and mother, King Jaffe and Queen Aeoleon decided to find a wife for their prince. Akeem did not appreciate the act because he wanted to find a woman whom he can love and respect and also someone who was intelligent, respectful and minded. Akeem and his best friend, Semmi decided to move to the United States as poor foreigner students in order to find what Akeem was looking for. They rented a place in Queens where they were able to work at a fast food restaurant owned by Cleo McDowell and his two daughters Lisa and Patrice.

The first day Akeem saw Lisa, he instantly fell in love with her because she was respectful, beautiful, minded. She had everything that Akeem was looking for in his land, Zamunda. The rest of the film based on Akeem trying to get with Lisa because around that time she was dating Darryl Jenks who was lazy. Eventually, Lisa broke up with Darryl after he proposed to Lisa in front of everyone without mentioning it to Lisa. Lisa started dating Akeem, however Akeem was still trying to fit in because he did not understand certain things due to how he was raised. So, Akeem ended up donating all the money he had in order to see if Lisa really loved him. Semmi was not happy with the poor living lifestyles; he contacted King Jaffe to let him know that they were in a financial crisis, which led King Jaffe to come to Queens, New York and revealed Akeems secret about being a prince to the family of McDowell.

Lisa was upset at Akeem because he was not honest with her at the beginning and she felt that she did not know Akeems identity and also when they started dating Lisas father did not approve the relationship because he thought Akeem had poor means. After all Lisa refuses to marry Akeem. Akeem returned home with his heart broken and accepted his parents offer by marrying a stranger. The day of the marriage Akeem was heartbroken and disappointed. When it was time to kiss the bride, Akeem lift the veil and he saw Lisa. They both were happy and Lisa felt honored that Akeem was ready to give up everything just for her. They got married and left the ceremony happily.

Overall, the general perception and critics of the audience is that the movie was a great example to show people to not judge a book by its cover. Akeem appeared to be a poor foreign student to Cleo McDowell and he did not accept any type of relationship his daughter Lisa had with Akeem. However, as soon as Cleo McDowell finds out that Akeem is the prince of Zamunda he changed his mindset. I also learned that as I am growing up to not let anybody stop what I want in my life and what makes me happy.
