Guardians of the Galaxy is a science-fiction, action comedy movie released on August 1, 2014

Guardians of the Galaxy is a science-fiction, action comedy movie released on August 1, 2014. It is the vision of director/screenwriter James Gunn. The movie had a budget of 232.3 million dollars.

The movie stars the always funny Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (Star Lord), a terran (human) from Earth who was abducted the night his mother passed away. He has spent the last twenty-six years flying around the galaxy as a ravanger. His most recent job has him in search of an orb for his abductor, Yondu (Michael Rooker).

The beautiful Zoe Saldana plays Gamora. Gamora is described as the adopted daughter of major bad guy Thanos. She has been turned into a killing machine by Thanos and is sent with her (also adopted) sister Nebula (Karen Gillan) to help Ronan search for the orb that Peter Quill has also been instructed to find.

Ronan the Accuser is played by Lee Pace. Ronan is the most direct antagonist of the movie. He wants to destroy the planet Xander for wiping out the majority of his race, the Kree.

Dave Bautista plays Drax the Destroyer. He wants nothing more than revenge on Ronan for killing his family.

Bradley Cooper is the voice of harshly honest Rocket. Rocket is the brains behind the bounty hunting team comprised of himself and the brawn, Groot (voiced by Vin Diessel). I could talk about Groots adorableness for hours.

Guardians of the Galaxy perfectly mixes physical humor with witty, fast-paced jokes. Sarcasm was a big part of this humor, which I found hilarious. Gunns portrayal of this group of misfits is one for the record books. I appreciated the lack of a serious love story. In the scene when Quill went in for the kiss, Gamora pushed him away.

The movies main focus was friendship team work and it stuck to that. That was refreshing. None of the characters seemed to outshine each other. They all had their separate agendas in the beginning, but learned to work together in the end. The final fight was a great representation of this. Yondu and his men, the team, and Nova Corps worked together to fight Ronans forces. Even though all three had different ideas of how it should end, they all worked as a unit. It was your classic underdog story, which was just a little cheesy.

It isnt the first comic book based movie, but the Guardians of the Galaxy comics arent as well-known as something like The Avengers. The movie was an introduction to infinity stones and Thanos. Both things had been mentioned in other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies before, but never quite explained. This is important because it is setting up future movies like The Avengers Infinity Wars, Doctor Strange, and more.

Nebula and Ronan were a little flat. They were very similar to other MCU villains. They had an agenda, but it seemed to get lost and made them just seem angry for no reason.

Almost everyone in the movie has experienced some sort of pain. Quill lost his mother. Gamora lost her biological parents. Drax lost his wife and daughter. Ronan has lost most of his race. Rocket is dealing with being illegally created. I believe all of the pain the team has experienced brings them closer together.

Humor was used as a block when scenes started to get too serious. The cast is all so talented, so it isnt like they couldnt handle some somber scenes. There was some emotion. For example, after Groots death Rocket and Drax had an emotional moment over their lost friend. Any other time it was avoided.

The music selection was superb (and the dancing even better). The music set up scenes and conveyed emotion without having to say anything.

Gunn knew what he was doing. You can tell he took the time to write a script that would be perfect for this movie. When it came to filming, he was very detailed oriented. I do believe it is the little things that push a movie from okay to great. The collectors shop was a good example. They often used a wide shot in these scenes to show the audience the extensive collections. The troll doll is first seen in the beginning of the movie and was humorously used at the end of the movie to trick Yondu into thinking Quill actually gave over the infinity stone.

The movie was better than many people expected it to be. It was very popular among children and comic book fans. The critics also seemed to like it. On Rotten Tomatoes it has 91% ranking and is Certified Fresh. It has 8.1 stars in IMDb. Overall, I was very pleased with the outcome of the movie. I give it 9 out of 10 stars.
